Commons:Partial blocks

Hello everyone, I am really surprised to see that Commons:Partial blocks is still defined as a proposed guideline. @Jim while closing the RfC said that the proposal was accepted. And there have been partial blocks carried out on Commons. So I believe we should now consider, if required, re-write that page so that a formal policy is presented for our users. If there is some, please correct me. Thank you. Shaan SenguptaTalk 09:29, 20 July 2025 (UTC)Reply

The RfC was only about adding the technical feature. It was specified that changes to policy would require consensus through a separate proposal [1]. One user started working on something on the page you linked but the user is now inactive. A policy is not adopted until it's adopted. The current policy seems compatible with the use of the feature even without a detailed guideline. -- Asclepias (talk) 13:27, 20 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
That's the only problem. A well explained guideline should be there. If someone is interested in doing so, it would be of great help bcoz its easy to explain users about the sanctions if they are written somewhere. I too would try to expand that page in the next few days (if possible) so that we can proceed on adopting it. Thank you. Shaan SenguptaTalk 09:15, 21 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
  • The guidance at COM:PB is probably a little too long-winded. For example, there isn't really a need to delve into the philosophy of sanctions broadly. I would suggest trimming to something like this, and probably just adding it to COM:BLOCK. GMGtalk 14:56, 21 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
Extended content

Partial block is a less restrictive alternative to a site-wide block. It provides the ability to prevent specific types of problematic contributions while still allowing productive participation in other areas. It can be used to prevent

  • Contributions to particular pages or namespaces,
  • Uploading and overwriting files,
  • Creating new pages, and/or
  • Notifying others using the "thank" feature.[1] Otherwise, legacy restrictions may be combined with partial blocks (e.g., unable to send thanks plus unable to send email).

Partial block was piloted in 2019. While some opted-in earlier, partial blocks were enabled on most Wikimedia projects on January 6, 2020. After a successful request for comment, partial block was enabled on Wikimedia Commons on January 1x, 2020.[2] Wikimedia Commons was the last Wikimedia project to launch the partial block feature.

Limitations
  • A maximum of ten specified pages may be part of a block at the same time.[3] Any number of namespaces may be blocked.
  • Multiple blocks with different durations cannot be placed at the same time; it is only possible to adjust settings of the current block or to set a new partial block.
  • Users cannot currently be blocked from only creating file or other pages. Administrators are limited to blocking a user from editing an entire namespace, which also prevents file or page creation.[4]
  • Users cannot be blocked from editing pages within a specific category. They can only be blocked from editing a named category page.[5]

References

  1. Note that more traditional options, such as disabling email or enabling autoblock, are not "partial" in the same sense as these newer options and cannot be applied in the absence of some other site or partial block. If a legacy option is attempted without some other block (i.e., selecting a partial block but leaving the criteria blank) the software will default to a site block plus the additional restriction. The default site-wide block will be reflected in Special:Block. However, a block log will reflect this as "specified non-editing actions".

Mass deletion required?

Hello. I noticed (as some images were being added to en.wiki today) that Famousseamus52 (talk · contribs) uploaded a large number of images of Pitcairn Islanders over a couple of days earlier in the year and tagged them all as cc-zero. Most of them seem to have been taken from the Pitcairn Island Study Center, but I cannot see any evidence that the site holds or waived the copyright to the images. In some cases they are taken from other website that clearly state copyright is held (e.g. File:Steve-christian-abyss.jpg is taken off this website, while File:Brenda_Christian.jpg is taken from The Times). I suspect the vast majority of uploads (over 140) need speedily deleting. Cheers, Number 57 (talk) 20:50, 21 July 2025 (UTC)Reply
