The rationale behind my contributions / La razón de ser de mis contribuciones

English: When I contribute to Wikimedia Commons or other Wikimedia projects, I always do so with the intention that my contributions will be permanently available (this includes even this page). Even when I edit Wikipedia articles, where, over time, some of my content will necessarily be replaced, I know that my contributions will remain available in the page history.

This, in addition to ensuring that all content will continue to be available for future generations (which is certainly also very important), also ensures availability in the short and medium term. If you think about ensuring that things will still be available many years from now (without expiration date), you will certainly be able to read or look at them again next year. If you don't give importance to preservation beyond next week, you're likely to end up missing some content that has disappeared.

The different projects of the Wikimedia Foundation, especially Wikimedia Commons, allow the preservation of knowledge in a permanent basis. Wikimedia Foundation's mission statement says so: The Foundation will make and keep useful information from its projects available on the internet free of charge, in perpetuity. In addition, the Foundation has a financial endowment and a good general economic situation, in addition to a good infrastructure, including backups. The combination of all this makes these projects very suitable for the permanent preservation of knowledge of all kinds.

Another excellent project for knowledge preservation is Internet Archive. However, according to publicly available information at the time of this writing (2025), their financial resources and infrastructure (especially, the absence of full backups in areas without major natural hazards), unfortunately, despite their good intentions to store all content forever, may not offer as many real guarantees for the permanent preservation of data.

Because of these reasons, my opinion is that deletion of files from Wikimedia Commons should be limited to strictly necessary cases: copyright infringements, images clearly outside the scope of the project, legal problems, etc. I have a similar opinion about the pages of the different wikis, when they host any useful, appropriate and validly licensed content.

Español: Cuando contribuyo a Wikimedia Commons o a otros proyectos de Wikimedia, lo hago siempre con la intención de que mis contribuciones estén disponibles permanentemente (esto incluye incluso esta misma página). Incluso cuando edito artículos de Wikipedia, en los que, a lo largo del tiempo, parte de mi contenido será necesariamente reemplazado, sé que mis contribuciones seguirán disponibles en el histórico de la página.

Esto, además de para garantizar que todos los contenidos seguirán disponibles para futuras generaciones (lo cual, sin duda, también es muy importante), también permite asegurar la disponibilidad a corto y medio plazo. Los diferentes proyectos de la Fundación Wikimedia, muy especialmente Wikimedia Commons, permiten la conservación del conocimiento de forma permanente. La propia misión de la Fundación Wikimedia lo dice: La Fundación pondrá y mantendrá disponible en Internet, de forma gratuita, información útil de sus proyectos, a perpetuidad. Además, la Fundación dispone de una dotación financiera y una buena situación económica general, además de una buena infraestructura, incluyendo backups. La unión de todo ello hace estos proyectos muy adecuados para la conservación permanente del conocimiento de todo tipo.

Otro proyecto excelente para la conservación del conocimiento es Internet Archive. Sin embargo, de acuerdo a la información disponible públicamente en el momento de escribir esto (2025), sus recursos financieros y su infraestructura (especialmente, la ausencia de backups completos en zonas sin grandes riesgos naturales), hacen que, desgraciadamente, a pesar de sus buenas intenciones de guardar todo el contenido para siempre, pueda no ofrecer tantas garantías reales para la preservación permanente de los datos.

Por estos motivos, mi opinión es que el borrado de archivos de Wikimedia Commons debería limitarse a los casos estrictamente necesarios: incumplimientos de copyright, imágenes claramente fuera del ámbito del proyecto, problemas legales, etc. Opino de forma similar sobre las páginas de las diferentes wikis, cuando alberguen cualquier contenido útil, apropiado y con una licencia válida.

My achievements / Mis logros

English: Although I value all my contributions to Wikimedia Commons and other wikis, there are some that I consider special, for different reasons, and in which I value even more to have made them available to users, and in which I especially appreciate that they can be available permanently. Below I include the most outstanding ones and their reasons.

Español: Aunque valoro todas mis contribuciones a Wikimedia Commons y otras wikis, hay algunas que considero especiales, por diferentes motivos, y en las que valoro aún más el poder haberlas hecho disponibles para los usuarios, y en las que aprecio especialmente que puedan estar disponibles de forma permanente. A continuación incluyo las más destacadas y sus motivos.

Manhattan

English: When I composed and uploaded this map in 2023, the most recent complete Manhattan maps available on Wikimedia Commons were a location map of Manhattan schools in 1960, and a rather simple tourist map from 2007. Too little for one of the most influential and well-known places in the world. So, I went to OpenStreetMap, and formed this map from several (many) screenshots, and uploaded it to Wikimedia Commons. While the appearance of the edges could have been better, it otherwise served the purpose of having a recent and detailed map of Manhattan.

Español: Cuando compuse y subí este mapa en 2023, los mapas más recientes de Manhattan al completo disponibles en Wikimedia Commons eran un mapa de ubicación de las escuelas de Manhattan en 1960, y un mapa turístico bastante sencillo de 2007. Demasiado poco para uno de los lugares más influyentes y conocidos del mundo. Por eso, entré a OpenStreetMap, y formé este mapa a partir de varias (muchas) capturas de pantalla, y lo subí a Wikimedia Commons. Aunque el aspecto de los bordes podría haber sido mejor, por lo demás sirvió para cumplir con el objetivo de disponer de un mapa de Manhattan reciente y detallado.

Barcelona

English: In the National Topographic Map of Spain at a scale of 1:50,000 (MTN50), the city of Barcelona is divided into 2 sheets. Moreover, these 2 sheets do not include a large part of its metropolitan area. The solution was to group several sheets (some whole, others only a part) of the MTN50, which is distributed under a free license, to compose this map and upload it to Wikimedia Commons.

Español: En el Mapa Topográfico Nacional de España a escala 1:50.000 (MTN50), la ciudad de Barcelona aparece dividida en 2 hojas. Además, estas 2 hojas no incluyen buena parte de su área metropolitana. La solución fue agrupar varias hojas (algunas enteras, otras sólo una parte) del MTN50,el cual se distribuye bajo una licencia libre, para componer este mapa y subirlo a Wikimedia Commons.

Stanford Torus

English: When we think about the very, very long term future of human beings, space colonization is an important aspect. One of the main proposed space habitat designs is the Stanford Torus, described in the book ‘'Space Settlements: A Design Study’', by Charles Holbrow and Richard D. Johnson, published by NASA in 1977, which is in the public domain, as it does not include a copyright notice, and was published at a time when, in the United States, the absence of such a notice meant that the publication fell in the public domain. Several images from this book were already available on Wikimedia Commons, but many others were not. Therefore, I composed and uploaded this collage of different images and tables included in the book.

Español: Cuando pensamos en el futuro del ser humano a muy, muy largo plazo, la colonización del espacio es un aspecto importante. Uno de los principales diseños propuestos de hábitat espacial es el Toro de Stanford, descrito en el libro Space Settlements: A Design Study, por Charles Holbrow y Richard D. Johnson, publicado por la NASA en 1977, el cual se encuentra en el dominio público, ya que no incluye nota de copyright, y fue publicado en una época en la que, en Estados Unidos, la ausencia de dicha nota implicaba que la publicación quedara en dominio público. Varias imágenes de este libro ya estaban disponibles en Wikimedia Commons, pero había otras muchas que no lo estaban. Por ello, compuse y subí este collage de diferentes imágenes y tablas incluidas en dicho libro.

Asturias

English: I leave for the end the one I value most from my contributions: one that is related to my place of origin, Asturias. Maps allow us to locate elements on the ground, while photos allow us to see how things are. Orthophotomaps, when they have a high level of detail, by joining map and photograph, allow us to see how things are and at the same time to locate them on the ground. This collection of 122 orthophotomaps, covering the main populated places of Asturias, allows us to know how those places were in detail at the time they were made (around 2010).
I always considered that this collection was something that should be permanently preserved. When I started contributing to Wikimedia Commons, like any other new user, I was not yet allowed to upload PDF files, so I started by uploading images generated from some of them. Eventually, I earned the right to upload PDFs, and started uploading the collection, until it was complete.
Since these documents are from a little known source, I asked for the help of an administrator to mark as reviewed the Creative Commons license of all of them, so that there could be no doubt in the future. In addition, I also marked as {{original}} all the files, so that they are preserved even though they may have derivative versions in other formats. In this way (reviewed license, and documents marked as originals), I consider that the goal I had set myself has been achieved: these documents, in their original state, and with all possible image resolution, preserved and permanently available to any user. Below this text the complete collection can be viewed, because all of them are part of the same achievement.

Español: Dejo para el final la que más valoro de mis contribuciones: una que está relacionada con mi lugar de origen, Asturias. Los mapas permiten ubicar los elementos sobre el terreno, mientras que las fotos permiten ver cómo son las cosas. Los ortofotomapas, cuando tienen un gran nivel de detalle, al unir mapa y fotografía, permiten ver cómo son las cosas y al mismo tiempo ubicarlas sobre el terreno. Esta colección de 122 ortofotomapas, que abarca las principales localidades de Asturias, permiten conocer cómo eran en detalle esos lugares en el momento en el que fueron elaborados (en torno a 2010).
Siempre consideré que esta colección era algo que se debía preservar permanentemente. Cuando empecé a contribuir a Wikimedia Commons, al igual que cualquier otro nuevo usuario, aún no tenía permitido subir archivos PDF, así que comencé por subir imágenes generadas a partir de algunos de ellos. Con el tiempo, gané el derecho a subir PDFs, y comencé a subir la colección, hasta completarla.
Dado que estos documentos proceden de una fuente poco conocida, pedí la ayuda de un administrador para marcar como revisada la licencia Creative Commons de todos ellos, de modo que no pudiera haber ninguna duda en el futuro. Además, también marqué como {{original}} todos los archivos, de modo que sean conservados aunque puedan tener versiones derivadas en otros formatos. De esta manera (licencia revisada, y documentos marcados como originales), considero cumplido el objetivo que me había propuesto: estos documentos, en su estado original, y con toda la resolución de imagen posible, preservados y a disposición de cualquier usuario, de forma permanente. Bajo este texto se puede ver la colección completa, ya que todos ellos son parte del mismo logro conseguido.
